So I was in the Fundamentals of Online Education Coursera Class. It was sad to see it fail as their technology planning didn’t scale. But it does beg the question, can you scale education effectively? I don’t think it can with the current MOOC strategies. Effective education is about trial, error and feedback. When the student to teacher ratio exceeds 100/1 then up to 100,000/1, how can this happen? Robograders cannot provide much insight, and peer grading can only go so far. Perhaps there is an answer in the future. But an online honor code is just waiting to be violated on mass if there is something legitimate to gain. So, we must ask are these certificates worth the bytes they are printed on?
