As I watched the first preseason NFL games last night, it struct me. Teaching is more like a professional sport than other professional jobs. Imagine how much time a quarterback spends preparing for a game, in which he only spends ~5 mins in action. That’s only about 80 minutes during the regular season. But for teachers, when we go to work we go to ‘play.’ We have very little time during the day to prepare and spend hours in game mode.
If, as a nation, we want our teachers to succeed, we need to have more time for us to practice and prepare for every minute of class time we teach. Will all teachers use this time equally, probably not. But it is a prerequisite for great teaching.
