So we attacked the concept of diffusion today. Many students could rattle off the definition for me, but none could explain it on a particle level. We had described that particles move when we opened the bag of popcorn. But that was more of a stop motion approach. We knew that the particles left the popcorn and traveled to the students noses. We didn’t know how they traveled.
To start, I brought up the gas properties Phet. I added two hundred light particles and we talked about how a particle could travel a thousand miles an hour but take minutes to cross the room, collisions. After coming to consensus, we moved on to dye diffusion. And explaining that with particle motion. Whiteboarding will come next class.
